Costa Rica, a sustainable tourism model

Committed to sustainable tourism, Costa Rica is a haven for global biodiversity.

A haven of peace for the environment

Costa Rica is a sun-drenched, holiday-smelling name! Even eco-citizen holidays! Tourism is doing pretty well in Costa Rica, which is literally the “rich coast”. Beaches and the sun: all components of mass tourism… and yet. This country today is an ideal destination for those who love sustainable tourism.

a paradise country

Costa Rica, a small country in Central America between Nicaragua and Panama, is a true paradise and is on track to succeed in its claim to bet on solidarity and sustainable tourism against mass tourism. This stretch of land of only 51,000 km2 combines the most diverse landscapes: tropical forest, valley, volcanoes and dream beaches. The center of the country benefits from a microclimate: around 20°C throughout the year.

To the west of the country is the Pacific Ocean, to the east is the magnificent Caribbean Sea. Two seasons punctuate coastal life: summer (December-May), the dry season, and the rainy season for the rest of the year. It is an ideal destination especially when winter settles in here. And Costa Ricans will know how to welcome you! The only downside: plants and animal species are in danger of extinction for a long time… The main culprit: tourism.

… Safely

by definitionWorld Tourism Organization (UNWTO), sustainable tourism is a way of doing tourism without exploiting a country, while respecting the culture and environment. Better: tourism contributes to the enrichment of the country, which can invest in the preservation of its fauna and flora. Concretely, not a single tree is cut down without a permit in Costa Rica anymore! This prevents hotel complexes and others from damaging this precious landscape.

Since the 1950s, the country’s culture has naturally gravitated towards the environment, and this is nothing really surprising here: the country concentrates 6% of the world’s biodiversity, while its surface represents only 0.03% of the terrestrial area. Thanks to the sustainable tourism program, 25% of the area is protected: there are more than 19 national parks and 8 biological reserves to visit! Dense afforestation put in place even allows the forest to regain ground. Small victory: today the country ranks fifth in the world for respect for the environment!
